It seems that I
have been horribly delinquent with this whole blogging business. To think that
my last post was about wandering the streets of Kuala Lumpur in search of its
foodie delights. Goodness, that was ages ago!
Looking back, my
Kuala Lumpur self sure didn’t know what she was getting herself into with this
whole teaching-English-in-a-foreign-country thing. How could she have known
that by April she would have…
…bonded with 74 other truly awesome ETAs
(some of these folks are really the coolest)
…continued to make a fool of herself speaking
Bahasa Malaysia (some things never get old it seems)
…eaten at least 10 pounds of rice (Yes, I’m
throwing an arbitrary number out there. However, I really am eating extraordinary
amounts of rice.)
…facilitated three English camps
…given out at least two dozen autographs
…taught lessons to about 600 Malay
students at her school (and interacted with countless more)
…still not memorized a good majority of
the names of said 600 students
…become chummy with the folks at the
canteen
…made a fool of herself attempting to
beat-box in front of the entire student body
…been seriously creamed by her students
in badminton
…feared for her life at the hands of
various Malaysian drivers
…sweated at least three rivers (ok, maybe
a couple hundred buckets is more realistic)
…communed with sea turtles and stingless
jellyfish
…been fried to a crisp by a searing
equatorial sun
…eaten a whole meal directly off of a banana
leaf
…witnessed the strange and stomach-wrenching rites of the Indian festival Thaipusam (I will write a post about this at some point in time)
…been stranded on a side of a highway
…attended a Malaysian wedding
…been touched by the overwhelming
hospitality and kindness of her Malaysian neighbors, teachers, and students.
No, there is no
way for her to have known that by April, she would have done all these things. And more.
